Gorilla Trekking
in Rwanda
One of only three countries where critically endangered mountain gorillas live. Tracking them in Rwanda is described as life-changing — and with only 880 estimated gorillas remaining on Earth, to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat is truly extraordinary.

A Truly
Life-Changing Encounter
Gorillas make their homes among the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in Volcanoes National Park, northern Rwanda. Trekking to see them, you'll be introduced by expert guides to one of the fully-habituated families — and you can stay for an awe-inspiring hour, often crouching just a few feet away while the gorillas go about their daily lives.
Hikes can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours or more. Expert guides deliver a pre-trek briefing on protocols for visiting gorillas living at 2,500–4,000m altitude. Porters are available to assist with backpacks and footing — the trails are hard work, but unquestionably worth every step.

10 Gorilla Families
Available for Trekking
Ten fully-habituated gorilla families live in Volcanoes National Park and are open to public visits. Each is led by a powerful Silverback.
The largest gorilla family and the hardest to trek — they range high into the mountains. Home to rare 5-year-old twins Byishimo and Impano, a once-in-a-generation sighting.
Easily accessible, led by the powerful Silverback Guhonda. One of the most popular families for trekkers seeking a less strenuous but deeply rewarding experience.
Led by the calm and easy-going Ubumwe. Reaching Amahoro usually involves a fairly steep climb — but the tranquil atmosphere makes every step worthwhile.
Now with 22 members — a very positive sign for gorilla conservation in the Virungas. A great option for families wanting a moderate trek with rewarding sightings.
Led by Akarevuro, originally habituated in the DRC. They tend to range quite far, making this a moderately difficult trek — ideal for more adventurous visitors.
A family of 13 who broke off from the Amahoro group under their leader Charles — a fascinating example of gorilla social dynamics in action.
Fairly recently formed from former Group 13 and Sabyinyo members, led by Munyinya. A young, dynamic family with a fascinating social structure to observe.
Three additional fully-habituated families are available in Volcanoes National Park. Our team advises on the best family assignment based on your fitness and timing at the 7:00 AM Kinigi briefing.

Rules for Visiting
the Gorillas
RDB kindly requests all visitors adhere to these guidelines to protect both the gorillas and the trekking experience.
Maintain a minimum of 7 metres (22 feet) from the gorillas at all times to minimise possible transmission of human diseases.
Viewing time is strictly limited to one hour per family per group to protect the gorillas from prolonged human contact.
Each gorilla family may receive a maximum of 8 visitors per session to minimise stress on the animals.
Gorilla tracking is only permitted for persons aged 15 years and above. Strictly enforced at park entry.
You may be denied entry if sick with a cold, flu or other contagious illness. Gorillas share 98% of human DNA and are highly susceptible to our diseases.
Photos are permitted inside the park. However, you may not use flash near the gorillas. Keep all movements slow and quiet.
Keep your voice low. Avoid rapid movements. If a gorilla charges, stand still, look away, and follow your guide's directions immediately.
Spitting in the park is prohibited. No littering. Eating, drinking and smoking near the gorillas are also strictly forbidden.
Mountain gorillas live at high altitude. Walk slowly and drink plenty of water. Porters are always available to assist every visitor.
Refund &
Cancellation Policy
❌ No Refund Policy
No refund is made in case of late arrival, flight delay, absence or cancellation of trip for any other reason. Permits are non-transferable to another person once issued by the automated RDB system. We strongly advise purchasing travel insurance before booking.
Practical
Information
Everything you need to know before you arrive in Rwanda.
Musanze sits at 1,700m with a changeable climate — expect both sun and rain. Evenings can be cold. Warm layered clothing is strongly advised for early morning departures.
Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts protect against nettle stings. Sturdy hiking boots are essential. Bring a lightweight rain jacket — the Virungas can be wet.
Bring a water bottle and a small snack — though eating and drinking near the gorillas is forbidden. Camera is essential. No flash permitted near gorillas.
RDB has English and French-speaking trained guides, plus a team of 80 trained gorilla trackers who speak French or English fluently.
Porters are available to carry your daypack and camera gear, and assist with footing on mountain trails — all for a small charge. Strongly recommended.
All visitors must present at the RDB offices in Kinigi at 7:00 AM sharp for the pre-trek briefing on the day of their scheduled trek.

Dian Fossey &
Gorilla Conservation
The Virunga Mountains are also home to the famous Karisoke Research Centre founded by the legendary primatologist Dian Fossey, whose work protecting mountain gorillas inspired the world. Her tomb in the forest is a deeply moving pilgrimage point for visitors.
Today, Rwanda leads Africa in gorilla conservation. Thanks to decades of protection, mountain gorilla numbers are slowly recovering from the brink of extinction — making every trek a direct contribution to their survival.
Rwanda's Rich
Cultural Heritage
A Rwanda gorilla safari is enriched by the country's vibrant culture. Visit the Kings Palace in Nyanza, witness electrifying traditional Intore dance performances, and explore Kigali's compelling Genocide Memorial — one of Africa's most important sites of remembrance and reconciliation.
Rwanda is celebrated for extraordinary sustainability, spotless cities and world-class eco-lodges. A safari here is as much an education in modern Africa as it is a wildlife adventure.
