Uganda holds more than half the world's remaining mountain gorillas — one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on the planet, set among ancient, mist-covered forest.
Tracking Mountain Gorillas
Treks are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and depart from one of Bwindi's four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo — or from neighbouring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Rangers and trackers lead small groups through dense, hilly rainforest until a habituated family is located, followed by an hour observing feeding, grooming and play at close range.
For a deeper encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi's Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors offers up to four hours alongside researchers and a semi-habituated family.
Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit
Standard permits are $800 per person for foreign non-residents (with a discounted $600 rate in the low-season months of April, May and November), rising to $1,000 from January 2027. Permits are limited to around 160 per day across Bwindi and Mgahinga, so it's worth booking 6–10 months ahead for peak season — June to September and December to February. Chimpanzee tracking follows small, energetic family groups through Kibale's tropical forest — one of the liveliest primate experiences in Africa. Beyond Kibale, chimps can also be tracked in Budongo Forest and Kyambura Gorge, each offering a different setting for the same encounter.
For a more immersive visit, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience allows extended time with a semi-habituated community alongside researchers, offering deeper insight into their daily behaviour.

The long dry season offers the best trekking conditions — firmer trails and easier hiking through Bwindi and Kibale forest, plus excellent game viewing in Queen Elizabeth. Book permits and lodges well in advance.
The short dry season brings clear skies and comfortable temperatures, ideal for combining Uganda gorilla trekking with a wider East Africa safari circuit.
The long rains bring lush, vivid scenery and fewer visitors, plus discounted gorilla permits in April and May. Some trails are slippery, but the forest is at its most atmospheric.
The short rains bring similar benefits to March–May, including a discounted November permit rate — a quieter window with excellent birding as migrants arrive.
