Feather Trail Safaris - Sustainable Tourism Policy

Our Promise

At Feather Trail Safaris, we believe that travel should leave a place better than we found it. Every safari, trek, and cultural encounter we facilitate is guided by respect—for wildlife, ecosystems, and the communities that call East Africa home. Sustainability isn’t a box we tick; it’s the heartbeat of every journey we create.

1. Protecting Wildlife & Ecosystems

Our Commitment: Preserve the wild spaces of East Africa, from the savannahs of Tanzania to Uganda’s lush forests.

  • Maintain safe distances from all animals, no shortcuts for the perfect photo.
  • Use low-impact, fuel-efficient safari vehicles to minimize emissions.
  • Avoid off-road driving in sensitive habitats to protect vegetation and soil.
  • Support park and reserve conservation projects, including anti-poaching initiatives and reforestation programs.
  • Educate travelers about animal behavior, seasonal migrations, and fragile ecosystems to foster awareness and respect.

2. Water, Energy & Waste Consciousness

Our Commitment: Reduce the human footprint on our fragile ecosystems.

  • Partner only with lodges and camps that implement solar or renewable energy.
  • Encourage short showers and water reuse, especially in dry-season areas.
  • Avoid single-use plastics: provide reusable water bottles and eco-friendly amenities.
  • Separate waste for recycling and composting, and work with local initiatives to safely dispose of non-recyclables.
  • Promote “leave no trace” principles in every activity, from trekking to canoeing.

3. Supporting Communities & Preserving Culture

Our Commitment: Tourism should empower, not exploit.

  • Hire local guides, drivers, and staff, ensuring livelihoods remain in the communities visited.
  • Purchase supplies, crafts, and services locally to strengthen the regional economy.
  • Respect sacred sites, traditional practices, and local customs; educate clients to do the same.
  • Support community projects such as schools, clean water access, and wildlife education programs.
  • Engage travelers in meaningful cultural exchanges—homestays, village visits, and community-led experiences.

4. Educating Travelers

Our Commitment: Transform tourism into learning experiences that cultivate lasting respect for nature.

  • Provide pre-trip guides on eco-conscious behavior and wildlife safety.
  • Encourage responsible photography, ethical tipping, and mindful shopping of local crafts.
  • Highlight the ecological and cultural significance of every site visited.
  • Foster curiosity and empathy: we want travelers to leave with stories of wildlife conservation and community resilience.

5. Sustainable Partnerships

  • Work exclusively with eco-certified lodges and tour operators that prioritize sustainability.
  • Ensure suppliers follow ethical labor practices and minimize environmental impact.
  • Collaborate with local NGOs and conservation organizations on wildlife and community projects.

6. Continuous Improvement & Transparency

  • Conduct regular audits of our operations and those of our partners.
  • Measure environmental impact: carbon footprint, waste generation, and water use.
  • Collect client and staff feedback to identify areas for improvement.
  • Publish annual sustainability reports showcasing achievements, lessons, and future goals.
