3-Day Gorilla Trekking Rwanda – Budget Tour

Highlights of this Tour

● Immerse yourself in Rwanda’s rich cultural experiences
● Encounter the majestic Mountain Gorillas, Kings of the Jungle
● Explore Kigali city including Genocide Memorials and craft markets

Rwanda, famously called the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is a stunning destination where rolling mountains, lush forests, and pristine lakes create unforgettable landscapes. The Virunga Volcanoes in the northwest hide rare wildlife, including some of the last remaining mountain gorillas. Lake Kivu offers peaceful inland beaches, while Nyungwe Forest National Park protects dense rainforest habitats filled with primates and exotic birds. Kigali, the vibrant capital, is clean, safe, and culturally rich, a perfect introduction to Rwanda.

Over the last two decades, Rwanda has invested heavily in tourism and infrastructure, making it one of Africa’s safest and most rewarding destinations. Birdwatching, lakeside retreats, savannah adventures, and authentic cultural encounters make every visit memorable.

Day 1 – Welcome to the Land of a Thousand Hills

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your Feather Trail Safaris driver-guide and transferred to your hotel.

Your day begins with an optional Kigali city tour. Founded in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt, Kigali is surrounded by green hills and is Rwanda’s largest and most scenic city. During your tour, you may visit craft markets, the Gisozi Genocide Memorial, and the Kigali Museum to gain insight into Rwanda’s remarkable history and culture.

After the city tour, drive for approximately 2 hours to the Ruhengeri (Musanze) region, Rwanda’s second-largest town, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga Volcanoes. Stop at the Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Centre for lunch and enjoy an interactive cultural experience. Learn about traditional banana beer brewing and, if interested, help extract banana juice and sample a glass (optional). Basket weaving and local crafts are also on display, with your visit supporting community livelihoods.

Optional early activities include visiting the Musanze Caves, taking a village walk, or visiting the grave of famed primatologist Dian Fossey, author of Gorillas in the Mist.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the National Park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing and allocation of gorilla families. Then begin your once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking adventure through the gentle slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes.

As you trek through the forest, guided by experienced rangers, you will eventually encounter your gorilla family. You will spend one magical hour observing them at close range, mothers with infants, playful juveniles, and the dominant silverback. This is one of the most breathtaking wildlife experiences in the world.

Trekking may be moderately strenuous, up to six hours at high altitude. Wear sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, gloves, and bring water and snacks.

Return to your lodge for lunch and optional afternoon cultural activities, then dinner and overnight stay.
