3 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda Budget Tour

Highlights of this Tour

Authentic cultural encounters
Meet the true Kings of the Jungle – the majestic Mountain Gorillas
Kigali city exploration including Genocide Memorials and vibrant local markets

Rwanda, famously known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” captivates visitors with its rolling emerald landscapes and breathtaking mountain scenery. The most dramatic views unfold in the northwest, where the towering Virunga Volcanoes rise above bamboo forests that shelter some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas.

Beyond the mountains, the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu offer beautiful inland beaches and serene relaxation. Nyungwe Forest National Park preserves vast montane rainforest ecosystems rich with primates and exceptional birdlife. And then there is Kigali – Rwanda’s clean, secure, and remarkably modern capital – offering a blend of history, culture, and contemporary African vibrance.

Today, Rwanda stands as one of Africa’s most inspiring success stories. With strong investments in tourism and infrastructure, visitors enjoy comfort, safety, and seamless travel experiences. From forest birding and crystal-clear lakes to savannah wildlife and authentic cultural traditions, Rwanda invites you to explore longer and deeper.

Day 1: Welcome To Rwanda

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly received by your professional Feather Trail Safaris driver-guide. Your journey begins with a complimentary guided tour of Kigali.

Established in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt, Kigali is gracefully spread across scenic hills and truly embodies Rwanda’s identity as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” During your city tour, you may visit the local craft markets, the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, and the Kigali Museum — each offering powerful insights into Rwanda’s history and culture.

Thereafter, depart on a scenic two-hour drive to the Ruhengeri (Musanze) area, Rwanda’s second-largest town, dramatically framed by the five magnificent Virunga Volcanoes.

Enjoy lunch at the Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Center before immersing yourself in a unique community experience. Learn about traditional banana beer brewing, discovering the fascinating process from fruit to fermentation. If you wish, you may join local women in squeezing fresh banana juice and even taste a glass (optional). Learn how sorghum flour transforms juice into a traditional brew and enjoy a refreshing sample.

The center also promotes basket weaving and other crafts, and your visit directly supports local families and community development initiatives.

Later, transfer to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

If your arrival is early, optional activities may include a visit to the Musanze Caves, a guided village walk, or a visit to the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, famous for her work with mountain gorillas and the film “Gorillas in the Mist.”

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to the National Park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing and allocation to your gorilla tracking group. Following park formalities, set off for one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on earth, tracking the endangered mountain gorillas.

Guided by experienced rangers, you will hike through the lush forest slopes of the Virunga Mountains. The moment you encounter a gorilla family is indescribable. For one unforgettable hour, you will observe them at close range, watching them feed, groom, play, and interact naturally in their habitat.

Standing just meters away from these gentle giants is both humbling and deeply moving. With fewer than 700 mountain gorillas remaining worldwide, this experience is truly rare and precious.

The trek can take between two to six hours or more depending on the gorilla family’s location and involves moderate physical exertion at high altitude. A good level of fitness is recommended to fully enjoy the experience.

We advise bringing sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, gardening gloves for protection against stinging nettles, snacks (for personal use only), and sufficient drinking water, as the rainforest can be warm and humid.

After your trek, return to the lodge for lunch or choose from optional afternoon cultural activities before relaxing for the evening.

You may also take time for last-minute shopping in one of Africa’s safest and most welcoming capitals before transferring to the airport for your onward international flight.
