What Is a Gorilla Permit?

A gorilla trekking permit is an official authorization to enter designated gorilla habitats with a professional ranger guide and spend up to one magical hour with a habituated gorilla family. Visitor numbers are limited daily to protect the gorillas and their ecosystem.

Where Can I Trek?

Uganda

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Permit: $800 per person

Rwanda

  • Volcanoes National Park
  • Short 2–3 hr drive from Kigali
  • Permit: $1,500 per person

Best Time & Availability

Gorilla trekking runs year-round. Dry seasons (Jun–Aug, Dec–Feb) offer firmer trails and clearer views, but permits sell out early—especially for peak months. Booking 3–6 months ahead is wise.
