Top Things to Do in Queen Elizabeth National Park

I still remember the moment I first entered Queen Elizabeth National Park. The air felt open, the landscape stretched endlessly, and the sense of anticipation inside me was almost overwhelming. After days of travel across Uganda, I had finally arrived at one of the country’s most iconic wildlife destinations.

But I wasn’t just there to observe, I was there to experience.

As the vehicle rolled through the park gates, I leaned forward slightly, trying to take in everything at once. What would I see first? Lions? Elephants? Perhaps something unexpected?

What unfolded over the next several days became one of the most immersive safari experiences of my life. And looking back, it wasn’t just about what I saw, it was about how each activity revealed a different side of the park.

The First Game Drive: Entering the Wild Heart of the Park

My journey truly began with an early morning game drive.

We set out just before sunrise, the sky still painted in soft shades of blue and gold. The cool air carried a quiet stillness, broken only by the sounds of the engine and distant calls of wildlife waking up.

As we drove deeper into the park, the landscape opened into wide savannah plains. It didn’t take long before the first sightings began.

A herd of Uganda kobs grazed calmly in the distance. Their movements were graceful, almost synchronized, as if guided by an invisible rhythm. Not far away, elephants moved slowly across the grasslands, their massive presence both powerful and peaceful.

I remember sitting quietly, absorbing every moment, realizing that game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park are not rushed experiences. They unfold naturally, revealing wildlife in its own time.

Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise: A Different Perspective

If the game drive introduced me to the land, the boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel introduced me to the water.

Boarding the boat, I felt a sense of calm. The gentle movement of the water contrasted beautifully with the energy of the land. As we drifted along the channel, I quickly understood why this experience is considered one of the highlights of the park.

On both sides of the channel, wildlife gathered in abundance.

Hippos surfaced regularly, their eyes and ears just visible above the water. Crocodiles rested along the banks, motionless and patient. Birds of all kinds filled the air, kingfishers, herons, fish eagles, creating a vibrant ecosystem that seemed to thrive in harmony.

At one point, an elephant approached the water’s edge to drink. The scene was quiet, almost sacred, as the animal stood just meters away, undisturbed by our presence.

It was during this cruise that I realized something important: the Kazinga Channel is not just a waterway, it is a lifeline for wildlife in the park.

Tree-Climbing Lions of Ishasha

One of the most unique experiences in Queen Elizabeth National Park lies in its southern sector, known as Ishasha.

Here, I set out on another game drive, this time with a specific goal in mind: to find the famous tree-climbing lions.

Unlike other lions that typically rest on the ground, the lions of Ishasha have developed a rare habit of climbing trees and lounging on branches during the heat of the day.

After some time scanning the landscape, our guide suddenly slowed down.

“There,” he said.

And there they were.

Two lions resting comfortably on a large fig tree, their bodies draped across thick branches as if they belonged there. It was a sight that felt almost surreal—powerful predators, relaxed high above the ground.

I sat quietly, watching them for several minutes, appreciating not just the rarity of the moment, but the calmness of their behavior.

This experience alone made Ishasha one of the most memorable parts of my journey.

Exploring the Mweya Peninsula

Another highlight of my visit was spending time around the Mweya Peninsula, located near the Kazinga Channel.

This area serves as a central hub within the park and offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and relaxation.

From here, I embarked on both game drives and boat excursions, each offering a different perspective of the park’s ecosystem.

The views from Mweya were breathtaking. Standing at certain viewpoints, I could see the channel stretching into the distance, surrounded by wildlife and dotted with boats moving gently along the water.

It was a place where I could pause, reflect, and simply take in the vastness of the landscape.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kyambura Gorge

One of the most unique experiences I had within Queen Elizabeth National Park was chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge.

Often referred to as the “Valley of Apes,” Kyambura Gorge is a hidden forested canyon that cuts through the savannah, creating a completely different environment within the park.

Descending into the gorge felt like entering another world. The temperature dropped slightly, the vegetation became denser, and the sounds of the forest surrounded us.

Tracking chimpanzees here requires patience and attentiveness. The terrain can be challenging, but the experience is incredibly rewarding.

When we finally encountered the chimpanzees, they were active and expressive, moving through the trees, communicating with one another, and displaying behaviors that felt both familiar and fascinating.

It was a reminder that Queen Elizabeth National Park is not just about large mammals, it is also home to primates and diverse ecosystems.

Bird Watching: A Paradise for Bird Lovers

As someone who appreciates nature, I was amazed by the birdlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

With hundreds of recorded species, the park is considered one of the best birding destinations in Uganda.

During my game drives and boat cruises, I began to notice the variety of birds everywhere, perched on trees, flying across the skies, or resting along the water’s edge.

From the majestic African fish eagle to the colorful kingfishers, each species added vibrancy to the landscape.

Even for someone who isn’t a dedicated bird watcher, the sheer diversity is impossible to ignore.

Sunset Moments Over the Savannah

One of the simplest yet most memorable experiences in the park came at the end of the day.

As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into shades of orange, pink, and gold. The landscape softened, and the wildlife seemed to slow down.

Standing there, watching the sun dip below the horizon, I felt a deep sense of calm.

It wasn’t an activity in the traditional sense, but it was one of the most powerful moments of the entire trip.
