Tracking Mountain Gorillas

Each trek begins with an early morning briefing before small groups are assigned to specific gorilla families. Rangers and trackers guide visitors through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes until the gorillas are located. Once found, guests spend one hour observing feeding, grooming, and playful interaction.

Volcanoes National Park is approximately 2.5 hours from Kigali International Airport — making it possible to enjoy a full gorilla safari even on a short itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda is a year-round destination. Here's how each season shapes your safari experience.

Peak Season
June – September

The long dry season offers the best trekking conditions — firm trails, clear skies, and easier hiking through forest. Ideal for gorilla trekking and game drives in Akagera. Book permits and lodges well in advance.

Peak Season
December – February

The short dry season brings excellent wildlife viewing and comfortable temperatures. A popular time for combining Rwanda gorilla trekking with a broader East Africa safari circuit.

Green Season
March – May

The long rainy season brings lush, vivid scenery and dramatically fewer visitors. Exceptional for photography, with the forest at its most atmospheric. Some trails can be slippery but the experience remains outstanding.

Green Season
October – November

The short rains bring similar benefits to March–May. Permit prices remain unchanged year-round, so this quieter period offers great value with a more exclusive feel.
