Getting There by Private Car or Transfer
This is how most visitors do it, and for good reason. A private driver-guide picks you up from Kigali International Airport or your hotel and drives you directly to Musanze or your lodge near Kinigi. It’s the most comfortable option, it lets you stop when you want, and if you’re already booked on a gorilla trekking tour, this transfer is typically built into the package.

Self-Driving from Kigali to Musanze
Self-driving is entirely possible and reasonably straightforward. The road is sealed the whole way and doesn’t require a 4×4, a standard sedan or SUV handles it fine. That said, Rwandan road signage can be inconsistent outside the capital, and speed bumps through small towns along the route are easy to miss until you’re on top of them. If you’re comfortable driving internationally and want full control over your schedule, this is a reasonable option, just budget a little extra time versus a guide who already knows the route.
Public Bus from Kigali to Musanze
For budget travelers, several bus companies run frequent, inexpensive services between Kigali’s Nyabugogo bus station and Musanze, with departures roughly every half hour and a journey time of about two hours. It’s a legitimate way to reach Musanze town cheaply. The catch: buses stop in Musanze itself, not at the park headquarters in Kinigi, so you’ll still need a taxi or moto-taxi for the final stretch, and you’ll need your own arrangements for the actual gorilla trek and permit, since buses obviously don’t include that.
Can You Do a Day Trip From Kigali?
Technically, yes, but it’s tight. Some visitors with very limited time do drive up as early as 4am to reach Kinigi in time for the 7am briefing, trek, and return to Kigali the same evening. It’s doable, but it makes for a long, tiring day layered on top of an already demanding trek, and it leaves zero buffer if there’s a delay. Spending at least one night near the park is the far more comfortable option, and it’s what we recommend to almost everyone.

The drive itself is part of the experience, not just a means to an end. A few stops worth building into your schedule:
