Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your journey begins in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean, modern, and welcoming capital. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you are met by your safari guide for a warm introduction and briefing.
Before heading to the mountains, you enjoy a short city experience, often including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a deeply moving place that shares Rwanda’s powerful journey of healing and resilience. Depending on your schedule, you may also explore local craft markets, art centers, and cultural sites to get a sense of the country’s identity.
After lunch in Kigali, you begin your scenic drive toward Musanze, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. The journey takes you through rolling green hills, small villages, and terraced slopes—landscapes that define Rwanda as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Upon arrival, you check into your lodge—whether midrange or luxury—each offering beautiful surroundings, comfortable rooms, and views of the volcanic peaks. You spend the evening relaxing by the fireplace, enjoying a delicious dinner, and preparing for the next day’s adventure.
Overnight: Lodge near Volcanoes National Park (e.g., Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, or Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge)
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – A Life-Changing Encounter
The long-awaited morning begins early with breakfast at your lodge before heading to the park headquarters in Kinigi. Rangers welcome you for a briefing, sharing important information about gorilla families, trekking etiquette, and conservation efforts. You are then assigned a gorilla family based on your fitness level and preference.
Once your group is ready, you begin trekking into the lush forest. The hike may be short or more challenging depending on the gorillas’ movement, but every step through bamboo zones, mossy trees, and misty slopes feels magical.
The moment you find the gorillas, everything else fades. You spend one unforgettable hour observing their behavior—watching the silverback’s strength and calm authority, seeing mothers care for infants, and laughing at playful juveniles tumbling through the vines. Nothing prepares you for the emotional impact of being so close to such gentle giants.
After this extraordinary experience, you trek back to your starting point, meet your guide, and return to the lodge for a warm meal. The rest of your afternoon is free to rest or enjoy optional activities such as visiting nearby communities or exploring the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
Overnight: Same lodge near Volcanoes National Park
Day 3: Cultural Visit & Return to Kigali – Departure
After breakfast, the morning begins with a light cultural tour, often at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where former poachers and community members share cultural dances, ancient traditions, and stories from the region. This visit gives you a deeper appreciation of Rwanda’s heritage and its efforts to protect wildlife while uplifting local communities.
After the cultural tour, you begin your drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may visit local markets, enjoy a city lunch, or stop at artisan shops for souvenirs. Your guide then transfers you to the airport for your departure flight.
This marks the end of your 3-day adventure, an experience filled with emotion, connection, and memories that last a lifetime.
