Meet the true Kings of the Jungle – the majestic Mountain Gorillas
Kigali city exploration including Genocide Memorial and vibrant craft markets

Rwanda, famously known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is a country of breathtaking scenery and remarkable conservation success. The rolling green landscapes stretch endlessly across this compact yet spectacular destination. The most dramatic mountain views rise in the northwest, where the mighty Virunga Volcanoes protect the bamboo forests that shelter some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas.

For contrast, the peaceful shores of Lake Kivu offer scenic relaxation, while Nyungwe Forest National Park preserves vast montane rainforest filled with primates and rare birdlife. And at the heart of the country lies Kigali, modern, clean, safe, and welcoming.

Rwanda’s impressive transformation over the past two decades has positioned it as one of Africa’s leading eco-tourism destinations. From forest birding and crystal-clear lakes to savannah landscapes and vibrant traditional culture, visitors often find themselves wishing to stay longer.

Day 1: Welcome to the Land of a Thousand Hills (Gorilla Trekking Rwanda Midrange Tour)

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional Feather Trail Safaris driver-guide. Your adventure begins with a complimentary guided city tour of Kigali.

Founded in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt, Kigali is gracefully built across lush hills and perfectly reflects Rwanda’s nickname. During your tour, you may visit local craft markets, the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, and the Kigali Museum, offering meaningful insight into Rwanda’s history, resilience, and cultural identity.

Thereafter, enjoy a scenic two-hour drive to the Ruhengeri (Musanze) region, Rwanda’s second-largest town, dramatically set against the five towering Virunga Volcanoes.

Lunch will be served at the Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Centre, followed by a unique community experience. Learn the traditional art of banana beer brewing and discover the fascinating fermentation process. If interested, you may participate by helping local women squeeze fresh banana juice and taste it (optional). You will also learn how sorghum flour is added to transform juice into a local brew.

Other community initiatives include basket weaving and handicrafts, and your visit directly contributes to supporting local families and sustainable tourism.

Later, transfer to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

If you arrive early, optional activities may include a visit to the Musanze Caves, a guided village walk, or a visit to the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, famous for her groundbreaking gorilla research.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing and gorilla family allocation inside Volcanoes National Park.

Following formalities, set out on one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on earth, tracking the endangered mountain gorillas. Guided by expert rangers, you will hike through the lush forest slopes of the Virunga Mountains in search of your assigned gorilla family.

The moment you encounter them is simply unforgettable. For one precious hour, you will observe these gentle giants up close — watching them feed, groom, and interact naturally in their habitat. With fewer than 700 mountain gorillas remaining worldwide, this experience is rare, emotional, and profoundly humbling.

The trek may take between two to six hours (or longer) depending on the location of the gorillas and involves moderate to strenuous hiking at altitude. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended to fully enjoy the experience.

We advise bringing sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, protective gloves against stinging nettles, personal snacks, and enough drinking water as the rainforest can become warm and humid.

After your trek, return to the lodge for lunch or participate in optional afternoon cultural activities before relaxing for the evening.
