4-Day Rwanda Family Gorilla Trekking Tour: A Memorable Adventure for a Family from Germany
Rwanda has a special way of welcoming visitors. From the moment you arrive in Kigali, there is a sense of order, warmth and beauty that makes it easy to feel at home. For one family from Germany, their first visit to Rwanda became a memorable four-day journey filled with wildlife, history, culture and one of Africa’s most remarkable experiences, gorilla trekking.
In August 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting Stephan S and his family of four on a private Rwanda family gorilla trekking tour with Feather Trail Safaris. Their journey started on 16 August 2026 and combined time in Kigali with an unforgettable visit to the Volcanoes National Park area, where they experienced both mountain gorilla and golden monkey tracking.
What made the trip even more special was the opportunity to learn about Rwanda, its history and its people while enjoying the country’s incredible landscapes and wildlife.
After returning home, Stephan shared a wonderful review about their experience. He particularly appreciated the care provided by their guide, Louis Marie, who looked after the family throughout their stay.
Family Trip to Rwanda
For a family visiting Rwanda for the first time, there is a lot to discover in a short period. Rwanda is known around the world for mountain gorilla trekking, but the country offers much more than wildlife.
The family wanted to experience gorilla trekking while also learning more about Rwanda, its history and its people. This made a four-day private itinerary a good choice because it allowed them to combine Kigali sightseeing with two important wildlife experiences in the northern part of the country.
The tour was carefully arranged so that the family could enjoy the highlights without feeling rushed.
From airport arrival to departure, our team was there to coordinate the journey, accommodation, transfers and activities.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
The family arrived in Kigali on 16 August 2026 and were welcomed at the airport before being transferred to their hotel.
After their journey to Rwanda, the first evening was intentionally kept relaxed. They checked in at Hotel des Mille Collines in Kigali, giving them time to settle in and rest before beginning their Rwanda adventure.
For many international visitors, the first evening is an important part of the safari. After a long flight, having a comfortable hotel and a smooth airport transfer makes the beginning of the trip much easier.
The family spent their first night in Kigali, ready for the next day’s exploration.
Day 2: Discovering Kigali and Travelling to the Volcanoes
The second day began with a Kigali city tour.
Kigali is one of the most interesting capitals in East Africa and provides an important introduction to Rwanda. The city is clean, organised and surrounded by rolling hills, earning Rwanda its famous description as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
The family had the opportunity to explore Kigali and learn more about the country, its people and its history.
For first-time visitors, spending time in Kigali before heading to the gorilla trekking region provides valuable context. Rwanda’s story is complex and important, and understanding some of the country’s history can make the rest of the journey more meaningful.
After the city tour, the family travelled north towards the Volcanoes National Park area.
The landscape changes dramatically as you leave Kigali. The roads wind through beautiful countryside, green hills and local communities before reaching the volcanic mountains of northern Rwanda.
Their accommodation for the night was Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, located close to the gorilla trekking area.
Being close to the park is particularly useful for families because gorilla trekking starts early in the morning. Staying nearby means less time spent travelling before the trek.
Day 3: The Highlight — Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Day three was the highlight of the family’s Rwanda adventure.
It was time for gorilla trekking.
Mountain gorillas are one of the world’s most fascinating wildlife species, and seeing them in their natural habitat is an experience that is difficult to describe with words.
The trek takes place in the forests and mountains of Volcanoes National Park. Depending on the location of the assigned gorilla family, visitors may walk through different terrain and elevations before reaching the gorillas.
For this German family, the experience provided an opportunity to see these incredible animals up close while also experiencing the natural beauty of Rwanda’s volcanic landscape.
Gorilla trekking is not simply a wildlife viewing activity. It is an adventure that involves walking through forest, climbing slopes and following the signs of a habituated gorilla family.
When the gorillas are finally located, however, the effort becomes worthwhile.
The family spent time observing the gorillas and appreciating their behaviour, family bonds and natural surroundings.
After the trek, they returned to the lodge for an afternoon of rest.
This was an important part of the itinerary. Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, particularly for families who are not accustomed to hiking at altitude. Having a relaxed afternoon allowed everyone to recover and enjoy the rest of their time in the Volcanoes region.
Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking and Departure
The final day brought another exciting wildlife experience, golden monkey tracking.
Although gorillas are the main attraction for many visitors to Volcanoes National Park, golden monkeys offer another wonderful reason to explore the park.
These beautiful and energetic primates are found in the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains. Watching them move through the vegetation, jump between branches and interact with each other provides a very different experience from gorilla trekking.
After completing the golden monkey tracking experience, the family began their journey back towards Kigali.
They stopped for lunch in Kigali before continuing to the airport for their departure flight.
Although the four-day tour was short, it gave the family a taste of several important aspects of Rwanda: the capital city, the country’s history and culture, mountain landscapes, gorillas and golden monkeys.
