Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda: The Underrated Alternative to Gorillas
Everyone who visits Rwanda wants to see the mountain gorillas. And honestly? We get it. A face-to-face moment with a silverback in the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park is the kind of thing that stays with you for life.
But here’s what most people don’t know until they’ve actually been there, the golden monkeys are just as magical, and far fewer travellers even bother to put them on the list.
That’s a shame. Because if you’ve come all the way to Rwanda, skipping the golden monkey trek is a bit like visiting Paris and missing out on the Marais because everyone told you to go to the Eiffel Tower. You won’t regret where you went. But you might regret what you missed.
Who Are the Golden Monkeys?
Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are one of Africa’s most striking primates — and one of its rarest. Their vivid orange-gold patches set against dark black fur make them look almost unreal, like something out of a nature documentary you assumed was staged.
They live in the bamboo forests at the base of the Virunga Mountains, in a habitat they share with mountain gorillas. In fact, the two species exist in the same park, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, though in very different zones. The gorillas roam the higher altitude forests. The golden monkeys stay lower, in the bamboo belt, where the canopy is dense and the light filters through in scattered golden shafts. Very fitting, when you think about it.
Globally, there are only a handful of places where you can see these animals in the wild. Rwanda and Uganda are the two most accessible. Rwanda has two fully habituated troops in Volcanoes National Park, each numbering around 80 individuals. What “habituated” means in practice is that they’ve grown comfortable enough around people to carry on with their normal behavior, feeding, playing, leaping between bamboo stems, while you watch from just a few metres away.
The experience is extraordinary.
What Makes the Golden Monkey Trek Different from Gorilla Trekking?
People often ask us how the two compare, because they’re genuinely different experiences, not just versions of the same thing.
Gorilla trekking is profound. There’s no other word for it. You might trek for hours through dense, steep forest. When you finally find the family, you sit in near-silence, watching these immense, gentle creatures go about their lives. The emotional weight of it is something you feel in your chest. It’s intimate, contemplative, a little overwhelming.
Golden monkey trekking is joyful. That’s the word that comes up again and again when our clients describe it. These animals are fast, curious, and perpetually in motion. They leap from bamboo stalk to bamboo stalk with a kind of reckless confidence, crashing through the canopy and landing with a clatter, staring at you with bright, inquisitive eyes, then bolting off again. Groups of them move like a wave through the forest. You end up laughing more than you expect to.
The trek itself is also considerably easier. The golden monkeys live in the bamboo zone at lower altitude, terrain that is relatively flat and much gentler on the legs. Most people reach the troop within 30 to 45 minutes of setting off. This makes it an excellent option for families, older travellers, or anyone who wants to work up to the gorilla trek gradually.

The Perfect Combo: Golden Monkeys First, Gorillas Second
Many of our guests who visit Volcanoes National Park do the golden monkey trek on day one and the gorilla trek on day two. This isn’t just clever scheduling, it actually makes sense physiologically and practically.
Volcanoes National Park sits at altitude. If you’ve flown in from Kigali and jumped straight into a strenuous gorilla trek, you might find the altitude hits harder than expected. Doing the golden monkey trek first gives your body a gentler introduction to the elevation and the terrain. You come back from it feeling energised rather than spent, and you go into your gorilla permit day properly acclimatised.
Beyond the altitude logic, it’s just a great way to build up momentum. The golden monkeys get you into the rhythm of trekking in the park — understanding how the rangers work, what the forest feels like, how to move quietly through vegetation. By the time you’re heading out for the gorillas, you’re already in your stride.
Practical Things You Need to Know
Permits and Cost
A golden monkey trekking permit in Rwanda costs USD 100 per person. Compare that to the USD 1,500 gorilla trekking permit, which, it’s worth saying, is absolutely worth it, and you start to see why this experience is such remarkable value. When to Go
Golden monkey trekking is available year-round, but the drier months, June to September and December to February, make for more comfortable trekking conditions and better visibility. The trails are less muddy, and you’re less likely to spend the morning in a downpour. That said, we’ve taken guests during the green season and the forest is genuinely beautiful in the rain, misty, cinematic, a completely different mood.
Timing on the Day
You’ll need to be at the Kinigi Park Headquarters by 7:00 AM for your briefing. This is standard for all morning activities in Volcanoes National Park, and it means an early start from wherever you’re staying. Most lodges in the area will arrange breakfast before dawn, it’s all part of the rhythm of the place.
After the briefing, a ranger-guided group of no more than eight people drives to the trailhead and begins the trek. Once you find the troop, you have one full hour with them.
Age and Fitness
Unlike the gorilla trek, there’s no upper age restriction for golden monkey trekking. The minimum age is 12 years old, making it a great activity for families with older children and teenagers. The fitness requirement is also lower, if you can walk comfortably for an hour at a moderate pace, you’ll be fine.
Photography
Your camera will get a serious workout. The monkeys move fast, so fast shutter speeds help. Flash photography is not permitted, but the bamboo forest lets in enough light that you don’t usually need it. Bring a lens with good reach if you have one, though the monkeys often come close enough that your phone camera gets great shots.
Pack a light bag with water, a snack, rain gear, and your camera. That’s really all you need.
Conservation: Why Your Visit Matters
Every golden monkey permit contributes directly to the conservation of Volcanoes National Park and the surrounding communities. The revenues fund ranger patrols, habitat protection, and community development projects in the villages at the park’s edge, the same communities whose buy-in is essential to the long-term survival of the species.
