Golden Monkeys
in Mgahinga

In Uganda, Golden Monkey tracking takes place in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the southwestern corner of the country on the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park forms part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area and offers breathtaking volcanic scenery as a backdrop to your primate adventure.

Visitors enjoy a guided trek through dense bamboo forests where these energetic, golden-coated primates leap gracefully between trees, forage, and interact in large social groups. The experience is typically less strenuous than gorilla trekking, making it ideal for families, solo travellers, and those combining it with other Mgahinga activities.

Golden Monkeys
in Volcanoes NP

Rwanda offers Golden Monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park — home to one of the largest habituated Golden Monkey troops in East Africa. The park's meticulously managed trekking routes, scenic landscapes and world-class lodges provide an intimate and comfortable primate encounter.

Rwanda's extraordinary commitment to conservation and its accessibility from Kigali — just 90 minutes away — make it a top choice for travellers seeking a short yet deeply rewarding primate safari. Golden Monkey tracking pairs beautifully with gorilla trekking in the same park, allowing you to experience two iconic primates in one trip.

The Case for Golden Monkeys

Why Choose
Golden Monkey Tracking?

A rare, intimate and deeply rewarding primate experience that often gets overshadowed by gorilla trekking — but deserves to be a safari highlight in its own right.

🌟
Rare & Endangered Species

Golden Monkeys are classified as Endangered and found only in the Virunga volcanic region. Seeing them in the wild is a genuinely rare privilege, not available anywhere else on Earth.

🤫
Less Crowded Trails

Without the intense demand of gorilla permits, Golden Monkey tracking offers a quieter, more intimate experience — often just your small group and the forest.

💰
More Affordable

Uganda permits start at just $60 (FNR) and Rwanda at $100 — a fraction of the gorilla permit cost, while delivering an equally unforgettable primate encounter with a troop of up to 80 individuals.

📸
Exceptional Photography

Their striking golden-orange coats against bamboo forest backdrops make Golden Monkeys one of Africa's most photogenic subjects. Natural light and relaxed subjects = incredible images.

👨‍👩‍👧
Suitable for All Fitness Levels

The treks are generally shorter and less demanding than gorilla trekking. Suitable for families with children 12+, seniors, and travellers with moderate fitness levels.

🦍
Combine with Other Primates

Golden Monkey tracking pairs naturally with gorilla trekking in the same park. Add chimpanzee tracking in Kibale or Nyungwe for the ultimate East African primate grand slam.

Be Prepared

What to Expect
on Your Trek

A typical Golden Monkey tracking day — from arrival to the forest and back.

Early Briefing

Arrive at the park offices by 7:00 AM for a pre-trek briefing. Guides will explain what to expect and the rules for interacting with the troop.

🎋
Bamboo Forest Trek

Treks through bamboo forest typically take 30 minutes to 2 hours. The trails are manageable for most fitness levels — no technical climbing required.

🐒
One Hour with the Troop

Once the troop is located, you spend one hour in their company. Troops can number 60–80 individuals — expect noise, energy and acrobatic leaping!

📸
Photography Conditions

Natural light filters beautifully through the bamboo canopy. No flash photography. Move slowly and quietly for the best close-up shots.

🎒
What to Bring

Long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, waterproof boots, rain jacket, water, light snacks, binoculars and a camera. Gloves are useful for bamboo thickets.

🌤
Climate & Altitude

The Virunga slopes are cool and misty, particularly in the mornings. Temperatures can be 12–18°C. Layers are essential. Rain is always possible year-round.
