What to Expect
on Your Trek
A typical Golden Monkey tracking day — from arrival to the forest and back.
Arrive at the park offices by 7:00 AM for a pre-trek briefing. Guides will explain what to expect and the rules for interacting with the troop.
Treks through bamboo forest typically take 30 minutes to 2 hours. The trails are manageable for most fitness levels — no technical climbing required.
Once the troop is located, you spend one hour in their company. Troops can number 60–80 individuals — expect noise, energy and acrobatic leaping!
Natural light filters beautifully through the bamboo canopy. No flash photography. Move slowly and quietly for the best close-up shots.
Long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, waterproof boots, rain jacket, water, light snacks, binoculars and a camera. Gloves are useful for bamboo thickets.
The Virunga slopes are cool and misty, particularly in the mornings. Temperatures can be 12–18°C. Layers are essential. Rain is always possible year-round.

Entry Requirements
- Reporting time at Visitor Information / Registration Centres at park entry is 07:00 AM.
- Foreign residents in East African countries must hold a minimum of four consecutive months' residency status or work permit in their passport or diplomatic card to qualify for resident rates.
- A Diplomat with a Residence visa may allow their spouse and legally accepted children to use resident rates, even if those family members do not have resident visas.
- East African residents must provide EAC ID Cards or Passports at the point of entry.
- A tourist with one Rwandan parent or a Rwandan spouse will be considered Rwandan if confirmed by the Immigration and Emigration Director General.
Restrictions
- The minimum age for Golden Monkey tracking is 12 years.
- A maximum of 16 people are permitted per Golden Monkey tracking group — significantly more generous than gorilla trekking (8 max).
