Sustainable
Tourism Policy

At Feather Trail Safaris, sustainability is not a marketing slogan — it is the foundation of every decision we make. From the vehicles we drive to the lodges we partner with, from the guides we employ to the experiences we design, every choice is guided by one question: does this leave East Africa better than we found it?

Our Philosophy

Travel That
Gives Back

East Africa's wild places — the ancient forests of Uganda, the sweeping savannahs of Tanzania, the volcanic highlands of Rwanda — are not just beautiful. They are irreplaceable. They sustain millions of people, countless species, and some of the most critical ecosystems on Earth.

We believe that responsible tourism, done with genuine intent, is one of the most powerful forces for conservation that exists. When travellers experience the wild, they form a connection with it — and people protect what they love. Our role is to facilitate that connection as carefully and respectfully as possible.

This policy sets out the specific commitments that govern everything we do. It is reviewed annually, shared with all partners and staff, and openly communicated to every traveller who joins us.

Our Commitments

Six Pillars of
Responsible Tourism

These six pillars guide every itinerary, every partnership, and every decision we make. They are not aspirations — they are operational standards.

1

Protecting Wildlife & Ecosystems

Our Commitment

The wild spaces of East Africa — from Uganda's impenetrable forests to Tanzania's Serengeti plains — exist in a delicate, interconnected balance. Every element of our operations is designed to minimise disruption to these ecosystems, and to actively contribute to their long-term health and resilience.

  • We strictly enforce safe approach distances from all wildlife at all times — no exceptions are made for closer photographs or prolonged viewing.
  • All safari vehicles in our fleet are low-impact and fuel-efficient, with regular emissions testing to reduce our carbon contribution.
  • We prohibit off-road driving in all sensitive habitats, including wetlands, forest margins and nesting areas, regardless of the activity.
  • We actively support park and reserve conservation programmes, including contributions to anti-poaching units, ranger welfare funds and reforestation projects.
  • Every guide and driver on our team is trained in animal behaviour, seasonal ecology and responsible wildlife interaction protocols.

Water, Energy & Waste Consciousness

Our Commitment

The ecosystems we operate in face acute pressure from climate change, water scarcity and pollution. We hold ourselves — and every partner we work with — to the highest standards of environmental responsibility in how we use resources and manage waste.

  • We partner only with lodges and camps that generate electricity from solar, wind or other renewable sources, or that have credible, time-bound transition plans.
  • All travellers receive pre-trip guidance on water conservation, particularly in dryland and semi-arid safari destinations where water is critically scarce.
  • Single-use plastics are prohibited across all our operations. We supply every traveller with a reusable water bottle, and our lodging partners provide refill stations.
  • Waste is separated at source for composting and recycling. We engage local waste management initiatives to ensure responsible disposal of all non-recyclable materials.
  • The "leave no trace" ethic is embedded in every activity we offer — from gorilla trekking briefings to lakeside canoe tours.

Empowering Communities & Preserving Culture

Our Commitment

Tourism only becomes truly sustainable when the communities who live alongside wildlife become its greatest beneficiaries and advocates. We believe that people protect what sustains them — and our job is to ensure that local communities have a direct, meaningful stake in conservation success.

  • 100% of our guides, drivers, cooks and camp staff are recruited locally from the communities we operate in or adjacent to.
  • We source food, crafts, firewood and supplies from local farmers and artisans wherever possible, keeping economic value within the community.
  • We deeply respect sacred sites, traditional ceremonies, cultural practices and community protocols. Travellers receive thorough briefings before engaging with any community.
  • A portion of every booking contributes to our Community Fund, which supports school infrastructure, clean water access and youth wildlife education programmes.
  • We design authentic cultural experiences — including village homestays, traditional cooking sessions and community-led nature walks — in partnership with, and under the governance of, the communities themselves.

Educating & Inspiring Every Traveller

Our Commitment

A safari is not merely a holiday — it is one of the most powerful educational experiences a person can have. When a traveller understands the fragility of a gorilla family's existence, the complexity of a savannah food chain, or the resilience of a community living alongside elephants, they leave differently. They advocate, donate, share stories, and return. That is the multiplier effect of responsible tourism.

  • Every traveller receives a comprehensive pre-trip digital guide covering responsible wildlife interaction, eco-conscious travel behaviour and the ecological significance of each destination.
  • We provide context at every site: the science of migration, the history of conservation conflict, the economics of community-based tourism — delivered through our guides in natural, engaging conversation.
  • We coach responsible photography: how to photograph wildlife ethically, how to seek consent before photographing people, and how to share content in ways that uplift rather than exoticise.
  • We encourage direct engagement with conservation projects — tree planting sessions, ranger Q&As, wildlife monitoring participation — where itineraries permit.

Sustainable Partnerships & Supply Chain

Our Commitment

Our sustainability commitments extend beyond our own operations to every partner, supplier and contractor we work with. We understand that the full impact of a safari extends throughout its supply chain — and we take responsibility for that chain seriously.

  • We work exclusively with lodges, camps and transport providers who hold recognised eco-certifications or who demonstrate a verifiable, active commitment to sustainable operations.
  • All supplier contracts include minimum environmental standards covering energy use, waste management, water conservation and community employment practices.
  • We conduct due diligence on labour conditions at every partner property — fair wages, safe working conditions and freedom of association are non-negotiable requirements.
  • We collaborate actively with local and international NGOs, wildlife authorities and conservation bodies on habitat protection, anti-poaching and community resilience programmes.
  • We will not partner with any operator, property or attraction involved in captive wildlife entertainment, animal riding or any activity that compromises animal welfare.

Continuous Improvement & Transparency

Our Commitment

We do not claim to have all the answers, and we are honest about that. Sustainable tourism is a moving target — best practices evolve, new challenges emerge, and our operations must adapt. What we do commit to is continuous, measurable improvement and full transparency about our progress and our failures.

  • We conduct bi-annual operational audits covering our own practices and those of every partner — covering carbon output, waste generation, water consumption and labour standards.
  • We measure the footprint of every itinerary and offer optional carbon offsetting through verified East African reforestation and clean-cookstove programmes.
  • We collect structured feedback from travellers, guides and community partners after every trip, and use that data to inform operational decisions.
  • We publish an annual Sustainability Report — available publicly on our website — detailing our environmental metrics, community contributions, achievements and targets for the year ahead.
  • Our sustainability commitments are reviewed and updated annually in consultation with our team, partners and an independent sustainability advisor.
