Frequently Asked Questions – Gorilla Trekking
Uganda permits cost $800 per person in high season and $600 during low season (March–May & November). Rwanda permits cost $1,500 year-round. Permits are limited and should be booked well in advance.
It is possible, but not recommended. The drive to the park headquarters takes about 2.5–3 hours each way, requiring a very early start (around 4–5 AM) and a long return after the trek. For a more comfortable experience, we strongly recommend staying at least one night near the park.
Trekking can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family's location. Once found, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat.
Trekking ranges from moderate to challenging. Terrain can be steep, muddy, and വന dense. Uganda treks are generally more demanding, while Rwanda offers slightly easier hikes. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier hiking conditions. However, trekking is available year-round, and low season months offer fewer crowds and discounted permits in Uganda.
Bring sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, a rain jacket, gloves, insect repellent, and drinking water. A walking stick and porter are highly recommended.
Yes. Treks are led by experienced guides and armed rangers. The gorillas are habituated to human presence and are carefully monitored for safety.
The minimum age is 15 years in both Uganda and Rwanda. This rule is strictly enforced for safety and conservation reasons.
You are required to keep a distance of about 7 meters. However, gorillas are wild animals and may sometimes come closer on their own.
Yes, and it is highly recommended. Porters assist with carrying bags and provide support on steep terrain while also supporting local communities.
